Thanksgiving Weekend of Wrestling

The Vashon Rockbusters participated in two tournaments during the Thanksgiving weekend, the Tough Guy tournament on Friday and the Turkey Tournament on Saturday. Tough Guy, as the name suggests, is a tough tournament. Competitors come from around Washington in order to challenge themselves against the best wrestlers in the region. The Rockbusters had a great showing, including a second place finish by Ryan Nelson and by Colin McIntyre. Colt Holloway and Boe Miles also placed and several other wrestlers made Vashon Proud.

The Turkey Tournament is for first and second year wrestlers. The Vashon Rockbusters took ten participants and performed well.

Tough Guy vs Turkey

As the name implies, Tough Guy is one of the toughest events of the year. It is designed for experienced wrestlers to measure their skills against some of the best wrestlers in our league and beyond.

The Turkey Tournament is for first and second year wrestlers. That is not to say it is always easy. There are some very good new wrestlers in our league, but it will definitely be easier than Tough Guy. Turkey is a round robin style tournament and we will try to match up wrestlers so that they get an even match.

Change to practice schedule

We started this season trying something new – separating the beginners and the more experienced wrestlers for one practice per week. This appears to be a success so far and we will extend the beginners only practice to one other night per week – Tuesday nights. This means that beginners will practice on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 5:45 PM to 7:00 PM and experienced and dedicated wrestlers will practice on Monday and Wednesday nights from 5:45 to 7:30 PM.

We recognize that this schedule will not work for all kids, especially those who have siblings in a different group. We are flexible in who attends practice as long as it is not disruptive to the other kids.

Round Robin in Yelm, 11/21

Vashon will be visiting Yelm for our third round robin style tournament. Yelm is about 50 minutes away, so we will be on the 6:20 ferry in order to get there on time. Wrestling is scheduled to start at 9:30, not 10:00 like normal.

We did really well last weekend in Kent, so let’s keep the momentum going. Remember to bring $2 for individuals at the door or $5 for families. Wrestlers are paid for by the club.

The meet is at Yelm Middle School: 402 W. Yelm Ave, Yelm WA 98597

Round Robin in Kent, 11/14

Vashon will be visiting Kent for our second round robin style tournament. Please note that weigh-ins end at 8:30, so we will be on the 6:20 ferry. Wrestling starts at 10AM, so bring something to read.

Kentlake High School: 21401 SE Falcon Way, Kent 98042

We will be competing against Puyallup, which joined us on the island last weekend, along with Fife Thunder and Yelm Twisters, plus our hosts, the Kent Cougars. These are all large and tough clubs so we should get a lot of opportunity to test our skills. Admission will be $2/person or $5/family. Wrestlers will be paid for by the Rockbusters club.

For your reference, here is a link to the South end ferry schedule. Some may take the Fauntleroy ferry, but most will leave from Tahlequah:

Home Round Robin 11/7 at Vashon High School

Vashon hosts one Round Robin this year, November 7th. We need all the help we can get. Manette Arteaga has sent all of you a list of job assignments. Please consider doing more than your share. Setup is 7PM tonight and with enough help, it should not last more than an hour. We will also need table help tomorrow. We expect 300+ kids tomorrow and more help will mean that the matches will go more smoothly and the tournament will be done faster. Let’s show our guests how it is done. If you are not assigned to a job, please see Manette.
